How To Prepare You and Your Family For Your Roof or Siding Installation

How to Prepare For a Safe Roof Replacement and What to Expect:

Having a new roof put on your home can be a very exciting experience for your family. As tempting as it is to want front row seats during the project this can be very dangerous. As soon as the roofing company arrives, your property is a work zone.  Work zones have several unexpected hazards that we would like to keep you and your family safe from. You may be asking yourself several questions about what to expect and how to prepare for your roof installation.

Safety of our customers and employees is our #1 priority. Below we have listed a few tips to help make your roof installation with Waterman Building & Remodeling safe and stress free. We hope this list can help answer some of your questions as well as help prepare you and your family for your roof installation.

Relocate Your Vehicles & Clear Driveway

  • The roofing contractors need to have access to their tools, trucks, and trailer throughout the day. Please clear your driveway for the day.
  • Materials for your new roof will need to be delivered. Plan an area that the materials can be placed by the delivery driver either in your yard or driveway.
  • You should keep your garage doors and windows closed during the project to keep out dust or debris.

Cover Your Belongings In Your Attic, Unfinished garages, and living spaces

  • During the roof installation dust and small debris is likely to fall into your unfinished living spaces, attic, garage, etc. There will be people walking on your roof, using tools and machinery, to remove your current roof and replace it with a new one.
  • You can keep your items covered safely with an old sheet or a drop cloth.

Remove Anything Valuable Or Fragile From Your Walls Or Shelves

  • The vibrations from the roof being removed and reinstalled may pass through your walls.
  • Consider any pictures or artwork hanging on your walls.
  • Fragile mementos that could be hanging from the walls or ceilings including light fixtures, trinkets, or ornaments.
  • Consider taking these items and placing them in a safer area while your roof is being replaced.

Prepare Your Children And Pets

  • There will be a lot of loud noises during the installation on your home. The loud noises could cause anxiety. Work Zones are extremely unsafe for children and pets. Discuss with your children that the yard will be off limits until the project is complete.
  • You are welcome to stay home during the project, you may want to consider having your pets or children visit with family or friends until the project is complete for their safety.

Move Patio Furniture, Grill, And Garden Décor

  • Please move any of your patio furniture to a safe distance from your home, either another part of your yard, the garage, or a shed is a great place to put these items. If you have any fragile garden decorations, you will want to move them to a similar safe place.
  • If you have window Air Conditioner units, please pull them in your home for the day. Central air conditioners may stay, we will cover them.

Cut The Grass, Prune Trees, Clean Up Pet Waste

  • Have any tree branches that are near your roof removed or trimmed before the roof installation can begin.
  • We use drop cloths, plywood, and boxes to protect your plants and anything else that may need to be sheltered in the surrounding perimeter of your home.
  • Short grass, clean of waste, will allow our clean up to be faster and more thorough at the end of the installation.

Turn Off Your Lawn Sprinkler System For The Day

  • Your roofing contractors will appreciate this most.
  • A soggy lawn will also hide debris on your beautiful lawn during our clean up.

Communicate With Your Neighbors

  • Talk with your neighbors and let them know what is going on. Inform them of the time frame of the project. Your neighbors will appreciate the information so they can adjust their schedule for that day.
